DAVIS, Calif. - Stephie Sabraw scored her third goal of the season 2:25 into the second half of Friday's NorPac match at Aggie Field Hockey Facility, but Cal responded with a goal of its own to extend its lead back to its original margin en route to the Bears' 4-1 win over UC Davis.
The Aggies will enter Sunday's home finale, against Pacific, with a 3-9 overall and 0-3 league record. Cal is now 7-5 and 2-1 respectively.
Of the nine shots recorded by the Golden Bears throughout the first half, three entered the Aggies' cage to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage at halftime.
Sabraw trimmed the Aggies' deficit after scoring her third goal of the season on a breakaway 1-v-2 opportunity. Originating from a turnover caused in Cal's third of the turf, Agustina Singh found her teammate on the counterattack and smacked a dart that landed on Sabraw's stick. From there, Sabraw simply out-hustled two Cal defenders before chipping a shot over the Bears goalkeeper.
"Once I saw the goalkeeper go down, I just tipped my shot over her," said Sabraw who scored on her only shot of the afternoon.
"I was super pumped when I saw her make her move because that it what players wait for all game. Once she committed, all I had to do was chip the ball over her. All I wanted to do after she made her move it shoot the ball towards the cage and not miss wide."
Sabraw's goal awakened UC Davis' offense as the Aggies nearly scored on three separate tip-ins as the half progressed.
UC Davis outshot Cal 10-7 in the second half and dominated play even though the team was unable to erase its halftime deficit.
Led by Singh, Kayla Wigney and Kristin Rodgers who each led the Aggies with three shots, and created dangerous scoring opportunities of their own throughout Friday's contest, UC Davis finished with 16 shots.
Cal also posted 16 shots; unlike the Aggies who had eight players take a swing at Cal's cage, one player, Lara Kruggel, who finished with nine shots and two goals, primarily influenced the Bears' total.
Freshman Briana Sooy recorded three saves in her debut appearance in the cage for UC Davis.
The Aggies' home schedule will conclude on Oct. 12, when Pacific visits Aggie Field Hockey Facility. UC Davis will honor its graduating student-athletes during a pregame Senior Day ceremony that will take place before Sunday's scheduled 1 p.m. start.
