Baseball's Late Rally Falls Short at Pacific

May 11, 2013

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Aggies scored one run in the ninth inning but it wasn't enough to overcome three errors and the UC Davis baseball team lost, 5-4, at Pacific on Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference game at Klein Family Field.

The Aggies (17-31, 4-16 Big West) scored four runs on nine hits with three errors while the Tigers (13-32, 5-15) posted five runs on eight hits with one error.

Pacific starter Jake Jenkins (1-7) picked up his first win of the season after giving up three runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Bryce Lombardi earned his first save after getting the final out of the ninth inning.

UC Davis starting pitcher Spencer Koopmans (1-7) suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs (five total) on eight hits over seven innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

Left fielder Tino Lipson had a game-high four hits and drove in two runs. Steven Patterson went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Pacific left fielder Gio Brusa went 2-for-4, including a solo home run in the eighth.

The Aggies took an early, 2-0, lead in the second inning. Patterson led off with a single to center and, after two outs, moved to second when Austin Logan drew a four-pitch walk. Spencer Brann followed with a single left to score Patterson as Logan moved to third. After Adam Young walked, Lipson rolled an infield single to second, scoring Logan.

Pacific was quick to match, however, as the Tigers scored two runs on two hits, an error and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

The Aggies went back ahead on Paul Politi's RBI ground out in the top of the fifth, but Pacific answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. UC Davis made two throwing errors on sacrifice bunt attempts in the inning.

The Tigers pushed their lead to 5-3 in the eighth on Brusa's solo home run to right.

In the ninth inning, pinch hitter Nick Lynch reached on a fielding error on a ground ball to first, allowing him to advance to second base. Lynch moved on to third on a ground out to short and he scored when Lipson hit a RBI ground out to second. Spencer Henderson singled to right to keep the inning alive but Pacific brought on Lombardi, who forced a fly out to end the game.

The rubber-match of the three-game series will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday. RHP Evan Wolf will take the mound for the Aggies.
