Baseball's Win Streak Snapped at Santa Clara

April 23, 2013

Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara right fielder Casey Munoz hit a walkoff double in the 10th inning and the UC Davis baseball team lost, 7-6 to the Broncos in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Schott Stadium.

The Aggies (15-23) saw their four-game wining streak snapped after scoring six runs on 13 hits with three errors andv10 men left on base. The Broncos (10-28) posted seven runs on 11 hits with three errors and left seven men on base.

UC Davis reliever Craig Lanza (0-1) suffered a loss in his first decision of the season after giving up one run on two hits in two innings with a walk and a strikeout. Lanza pitched a flawless eighth and ninth but issued a leadoff walk followed by two singles and the walkoff double to Munoz in the 10th.

Steven Patterson, the reigning Big West Field Player of the Week, extended his hitting streak to eight games by going 3-for-5 with a RBI. It's Patterson's third consecutive game with three hits. The Stockton, Calif., native has 19 hits during his eight-game streak and has posted 10 RBIs over the last three games.

Santa Clara reliever Max Deering (2-4) earned the win after giving up one run (none earned) on three hits in four innings with no walks and two strikeouts.

The Broncos picked up the victory after pushing across the game-winning run in the 10th, but the scoring started early.

Santa Clara jumped out to an early lead after posting two runs in the first inning.

The Aggies took back the lead quickly, however, with three runs on three hits and an error in the second. After Patterson fouled out, Nick Lynch ripped a single up the middle and scored in the next at-bat, when Cameron Olson doubled to right center. Austin Logan followed with a walk and both players advanced on an error by the pitcher. Austin March hit the Aggies' second double of the inning and both Olson and Logan scored.

It was tied up, 4-4, when Santa Clara scored two runs in the fifth but the Aggies scored two runs of their own in the seventh.

Kevin Barker led off with a triple to right and scored on a RBI groundout by John Williams. Paul Politi then singled and moved to second when Patterson reached on an error by the second baseman. Nick Lynch was hit by a pitch - the eighth time he has been plunked in the last 10 games - to load the bases before Mike Mazzara hit a pinch-hit ground out to second, allowing Politi to score.

Before Santa Clara won on a walkoff double in the 10th, the Aggies had a chance to win it in the ninth. Patterson and Lynch hit back-to-back two-out singles but Izaak Silva grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat.

UC Davis will stay on the road this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series at No. 21 ranked UC Irvine. The Aggies have faced a top-25 foe in three of their first five conference series.
