LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Davis baseball team was limited to just five hits and dropped the finale of a three-game Big West Conference series, 7-2, against Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon at Blair Field.
The Aggies (11-22, 0-9 Big West) tallied two runs on five hits with one error. The Dirtbags (16-18, 6-3) posted seven runs on 10 hits with two errors.
Long Beach State starting pitcher David Hill (2-2) earned the win after tossing five scoreless innings of two-hit ball with two walks and one strikeout. Dirtbags' reliever Nick Sabo allowed both UC Davis runs in the sixth and did not register an out. The following three relievers, however, combined to surrender just one hit in four scoreless innings.
UC Davis starter Evan Wolf (1-2) suffered the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits in four innings with no walks and two strikeouts.
Second baseman Steven Patterson posted his seventh hit of the series on Sunday while designated hitter Nick Lynch had a team-best two hits and scored a run.
The Dirtbags had seven different players record a hit five different players tally a run. First baseman Jeff Yamaguchi had a game-high two RBIs.
Long Beach State scored two runs in the second inning for the third straight game to take an early lead and built upon it with another run in the third, two more in the fourth and its last two in the seventh.
UC Davis scored a pair of runs in the sixth but the offense was held in check in the other eight frames. First baseman Austin Logan hit a RBI double in the sixth before Mike Mazzara followed with a pinch-hit RBI groundout to shortstop.
The Aggies scored two runs on two hits in the sixth but mustered just three other hits in the game. They stranded 11 baserunners for the second time in the three-game series.
UC Davis will pay a visit to Nevada at 2 p.m. on Tuesday before playing host to UC Riverside for Picnic Day weekend.
