April 12, 2013

Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Second baseman Steven Patterson went 3-for-4 for the Aggies but the UC Davis baseball team lost, 9-2, on Friday night in the opening game of a three-game Big West Conference series against Long Beach State at Blair Field.

The Aggies (11-20, 0-7 Big West) tallied two runs on eight hits with three errors. UC Davis has made 22 errors over the last seven games and has 61 total in 35 games this year. The Dirtbags (14-18, 4-3) posted nine runs on 14 hits with three errors as well.

Long Beach State starter Shane Carle (2-5) picked up the win after allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings with two walks and five strikeouts. The Dirtbags' bullpen allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings.

UC Davis starter Harry Stanwyck (3-5) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits in 5.1 innings with two walks and one strikeout.

Patterson shined for the Aggies at the plate with his 3-for-4 performance. Third baseman Paul Politi, coming off his game-winning three-run homer against Saint Mary's on Tuesday, went 2-for-3 with a walk. Outfielder John Williams had a RBI but snapped his team-best 10-game hitting streak by going 0-for-3.

The Dirtbags were led offensively by right fielder Richard Prigatano, who was 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second inning before adding on three in the fifth and four in the sixth.

UC Davis got on the board with a pair of runs in the seventh. Kevin Barker struck out swinging, but reached on wild pitch. He moved to third after pinch hitter Adam Young singled and the left fielder misplayed it for an error. Williams reached on another error, which brought home Barker and pushed Young up to third. Pinch hitter Tino Lipson then grounded into a fielder's choice to score Young.

But those two runs were it for the UC Davis offense on Friday night, as the Aggies left 11 men on base and rolled into one double play.

UC Davis will get another crack at the Dirtbags at 2 p.m. on Saturday before closing out the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
