Bakersfield Powers Way Past Aggies, 12-5

DAVIS, Calif. - - Third baseman Paul Politi and second baseman Steven Patterson each collected two hits while Mike Mazzara knocked in two runs, but CSU Bakersfield rode early scoring en route to a 12-5 nonconference baseball win over UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

UC Davis fell to 6-9 after losing its third straight game while the Roadrunners won their second straight, improving to 10-4. Catcher Cael Brockmeyer had four hits and knocked in four runs, three of them coming on two home runs. He finished 4 for 6 overall, helping highlight Bakersfield's 23-hit attack.

The Aggies trailed 1-0 in the first inning before scoring two runs in their half of the frame. Patterson singled to left field, delivering Seth Batty with UC Davis' first run in 19 innings. Politi, who singled with one out, came across on an infield error, giving UC Davis a 2-1 lead.

Bakersfield took the lead for good in the third inning, however, picking up five runs on five hits. Brockmeyer had a two-run homer to left field, designated hitter Dylan Christensen added a sacrifice fly, and Jordie Hein and Tyler Shyrock each had RBI singles.

Shortstop Tino Lipson had a run-scoring single to left in the fourth and Mazzara added a two-run double down the right field line in the seventh to account for UC Davis' other runs.

Brockmeyer led off the seventh with a homer to left to start a three-run seventh inning for the Roadrunners who had three hits. That gave the an 11-3 lead.

The Aggies had 10 hits in the game with Politi and Patterson leading the way with two. Right fielder John Williams had a double while Lipson, designated hitter Nick Lynch, first baseman Austin Logan and catcher Spencer Brann also collected hits.

Starter Spencer Koopmans was relieved by Robert Parucha with none out in the third inning. Koopmans took the loss, falling to 0-3, after allowing three runs. Parucha and reliever Zach Williams were charged with four runs each.

Scott Brattvet went 6-2/3 innings, giving up nine hits and allowing five runs, but picked up the win to improve to 3-0. He walked four and struck out none. Shyrock also had four hits for Bakersfield while first baseman Chance Gusbeth, right fielder Garrett Pierce and left fielder Kevin Younger each added three.

The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Dobbins Stadium.
