DAVIS, Calif. - Led by four players who recorded individual sweeps in Saturday's Big West opener at the Marya Welch Tennis Center, UC Davis defeated Cal Poly 5-2 to earn its inaugural conference victory of the season.
The win improves the Aggies' record to 4-7 with a 1-0 BWC mark, Cal Poly falls to 2-8 and 0-3 BWC on the season with the loss.
Megan Heneghan and doubles partner
Melissa Kobayakawa started the day on a positive note by recording the Aggies' first match victory with their 8-1 triumph over Gabrielle Gatewood and Kathryn Webb. Once teammates
Nicole Koehly and
Layla Sanders downed Jen Cornea and Ane McPike 8-2, the doubles point was officially earned by UC Davis.
Throughout singles competition, all four Aggies posted individual victories to help their team record the win in only its second home match of the season.
Heneghan started the string of UC Davis singles victories by defeating Louise Oxnevad, Cal Poly's top singles player, in straight sets by matching 6-1, 6-1 marks.
In addition to Heneghan, Koehly also defeated her opponent, Anna Klavins, in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-3 score.
Even though Sanders and Kobayakawa needed three sets in their respective singles matches, the end result was similar to that of their doubles partners with the former defeating Cornea 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, and the latter earning her second straight singles win by defeating McPike 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Aggies will have little time to enjoy this victory as the team will return to the road to face San Jose State on Sunday, March 3, in a 1 p.m. match at the Spartan Tennis Center.
