Oklahoma State Rallies To Take Series Opener

STILLWATER, Okla. - First baseman Nick Lynch had two hits, including a double, and right fielder John Williams had a pair of hits and two RBI's, but Oklahoma State rallied for a 4-2 nonconference baseball win over UC Davis at Reynolds Stadium on Friday.

UC Davis fell to 5-5 while the Cowboys improved to 8-1 with its sixth straight win. The game, played in chilly 38 degree weather, was the first of three this weekend between the programs that have never squared off on the diamond.

Starter Harry Stanwyck pitched seven innings for UC Davis, scattering six hits and holding the Cowboys in check through the first four innings before they managed a pair of runs in the fifth to tie the game, 2-2.

Catcher Victor Romero homered to lead off the eighth for the eventual game-winning run while shortstop Randy McCurry's RBI double off reliever Craig Lanza provided the final run.

Stanwyck was impressive through the first four innings of the game, facing the minimum 13 batters until Zach Fish's triple with one out in the fifth. Stanwyck set down the first seven batters he faced before Gage Green singled to left. Green was subsequently caught stealing by catcher Spencer Brann.

The Aggies gave him a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Brann singled to right and designated hitter Tino Lipson later stole second after reaching on a fielder's choice. Williams then delivered UC Davis two runs with his single through the right side.

The Cowboys answered in the bottom half of the inning after loading the bases on Fish's triple and two walks with one out. Green's single to right scored Romero and Fish.

Vince Wheeland pitched the final three innings to pick up his second win of the esason, striking out five batters. Starter Jason Hursh allowed eight hits in six innings of work, striking out one and walking none.

Stanwyck (0-2) had a pair of strikeouts and two walks while Lanza gave up just one hit in his inning. Besides Lynch and Williams, second baseman Steven Patterson also had two hits. Centerfielder Kevin Barker added a hit. Third baseman Paul Politi, who entered the game with a 19-game hitting streak, went hitless on Friday.

The teams will play the middle game of their series on Saturday at 11 a.m. (PST). Righty Spencer Koopmans (0-1) will get the start for the Aggies, facing the Cowboys' left Tyler Nurdin (0-0).
