PORTLAND - Trailing 1-0 after Portland opened the day by winning two of three doubles matches, UC Davis responded by capturing four of six singles matchups to defeat the host Pilots 4-3 in Sunday's non-conference meeting at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center in Portland, Ore.
The win snaps a five-game slide and increases the Aggies' record to 2-5, Portland falls to 3-3 with the loss.
Even though Portland eventually took an early lead based on its doubles results, the No. 2 duo of Layla Sanders and Nicole Koehly gave the Aggies a chance to capture that point by defeating Maja Mladenovic and Saroop Dhatt 8-4.
Had either of the other doubles events ended in the Aggies' favor, they would have been the team to enter the round of singles with a one-point lead.
Instead, that doubles shortfall just set the stage for a spirited UC Davis comeback.
Sanders and Koehly earned individual sweeps against the Pilots when the former defeated Sabine Fuchs 6-2, 6-4, with the latter downing Milagros Cubelli 7-5, 6-1.
In a hard-fought match at the No. 5 court, Melissa Kobayakawa fought to earn the requisite break needed to record a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set singles win over Tori Troesch.
The Aggies' come-from-behind effort concluded when Lauren Curry defeated Saroop Dhatt 6-2, 6-2, giving UC Davis the four points needed to leave the Lousiana-Pacific Tennis Center with a win.
All four of UC Davis' singles wins were captured in straight-set fashion.
The Aggies will continue their season-long five-game road trip against Causeway rival Sacramento State in a 1:30 p.m. match from the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club on Friday, Feb. 15.
