FRESNO, Calif. - Spencer Brann hit his first home run of the year in a 3-for-4 performance, but Fresno State took an 11-4 win on Wednesday in a nonconference baseball matchup at Beiden Field in Fresno.
UC Davis drops to 16-24 on the year while Fresno State improves to 19-22.
Brann was just a triple shy of the hitting for the cycle as he doubled to lead off the sixth and hit a single in the eighth to go with his fourth-inning two-run homer. He scored twice and drove in two more runs in a game that featured nine doubles and three home runs.
Paul Politi went 2-for-4 with a double while Kevin Barker and Nick Lynch also recorded multiple-base hits.
UC Davis scored in the first after Barker led off with a double, moved to third on a David Popkins single then scored on Lynch's fly ball into right field. Fresno State, however, put up eight unanswered runs over the next three innings to take an 8-1 lead.
Brann's homer cut into the Bulldogs' lead briefly after he took a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right center field. Lynch would come around to score on the two-run shot after leading off the inning with a double.
The Bulldogs continued their powerful offense, however, taking an 11-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run from Keneth Wise and an RBI double by Chris Mariscal.
Brann scored UC Davis' final run of the game in the sixth after leading off with a double. He moved to third on a single from Politi, then scored on John Williams' sacrifice fly into center field.
The Aggie pitching staff combined to strike out nine Bulldog batters with reliever Chris Levy racking up four strikeouts in the loss. Starter Evan Wolf was given the loss to move to 1-4 on the year.
UC Davis returns to Big West Conference play when the Aggies host Cal Poly in a three-game series beginning Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium.
