Gauchos Get Win Behind Big Second Inning

April 27, 2012

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Kevin Barker hit his first career home run and Austin Logan added a run in the ninth, but UC Santa Barbara scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning to claim an 8-2 victory over UC Davis on Friday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara.

UC Davis drops to 15-22 overall and are 3-7 in the Big West Conference while UC Santa Barbara improves to 22-18. The Gauchos own an 8-5 league mark.

Dayne Quist suffered his first loss of the year after giving up up all eight Gaucho runs and drops to 6-1 overall. The senior lefty struck out four and walked just one batter in 5.1 innings of work.

For UC Santa Barbara, freshman Andrew Vasquez gave up just one run on four hits while striking out eight batters. He walked five, and moved to 6-3 on the year.

Barker's solo shot came in the top of the second inning when he took a 3-0 pitch over the left field wall to give UC Davis a 1-0 lead.

A combination of Aggie errors and well-placed hits by the Gauchos, however, allowed for a six-run second inning for UCSB.

Joey Wallace led off with a double, stole third then scored on Greg Mahle's base hit. Marc Venning and Ryan Palermo followed with hits of their own while an error on Quist's throw to first allowed Steven Moon to reach first.

From there, Joe Winterburn's sacrifice fly scored a fourth Gaucho run, but Brett Vertigan struck out for the second out of the inning.

UC Santa Barbara would get two more runs off a Brandon Trinkwon single before Mahle grounded out to end the inning.

The Gauchos added another run in the fourth and their final run came in the sixth.

UC Davis had a chance to score in the seventh after Eric Johnson led off with a base hit, moved to second on a wild pitch, then reached third on Mike Mazzara's pinch hit ground out. With two outs, however, Ryan Allgrove's pinch hit appearance resulted in a ground out to cancel the brief Aggie threat.

Logan's pinch hit double led off the top of the ninth inning and he would come around to score on Adam Young's sacrifice fly for the 8-2 final score.

The series continues on Saturday at 1 p.m.
