Aggies Secure No. 2 Seed After Downing Titans, 6-1

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team closed out the regular season in impressive fashion, cruising to a 6-1 Big West victory over Cal State Fullerton on senior day, Saturday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

The Aggies secured the No. 2 seed entering the Big West Championships, the best league finish in program history since reclassifying to Division I. UC Davis ended the regular season with a 11-11 overall record and 6-2 conference mark. The Aggies win a tiebreaker with UC Irvine after defeating the Anteaters back on Apr. 14.

UC Davis got off to a quick start by sweeping the doubles matches, starting with an 8-2 win for seniors Dahra Zamudio and Noelle Eades at the No. 3 position against the pair of Tomalko/dela Cruz. Layla Sanders and Kelly Chui added another 8-2 win at the No. 1 spot over Tiffany Mai and Morgan McIntosh while Megan Heneghan and Ellie Edles completed the doubles sweep by defeating Monica Rodriguez and Kalika Slevcove, 8-5.

All five of the singles victories for the Aggies were in straight sets. Sanders was perfect in the opening set en route to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Slevcove in the No. 5 position. Heneghan surrendered just one game at the No. 1 spot, defeating Tiffany Main in a 6-0, 6-1 match. Chui had an identical score for the clinching win, making quick work of Rodriguez in the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-1.

UC Davis continued to roll in singles play, following a Nicole Koehly No. 6 victory over Jessica Pepa, 6-4, 6-1. Lauren Curry rounded out the singles wins for the Aggies, downing dela Cruz, 6-4, 6-0.

UC Davis will now prepare for the Big West Championships, starting on Thursday, Apr. 26 in Indian Wells, Calif. Complete seeds and match times will be announced by the league office soon.
