DAVIS, Calif. - Dayne Quist struck out 11 batters in eight innings of work and Eric Johnson and Scott Kalush each went 3-for-3 as the UC Davis baseball team took a 7-2 victory over UC Riverside on Friday at the Riverside Sports Complex.
UC Davis improves to 14-19 overall and 3-4 in the Big West while UC Riverside drops to 12-19 on the year and 2-5 in league play.
Quist turned in another dominant performance to remain a perfect 6-0 on the year. He allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits, walked two batters and struck out 11. It marks Quist's second double-digit strikeout performance of the year after he fanned a career-high 12 against Utah in the season opener.
The senior lefty struck out five straight in the first and second innings, then started and ended the fourth inning with two additional strike outs as he would go on to retire nine straight until giving up a single to lead off the sixth inning.
He gave up two runs in the sixth, retired the side in the seventh, then struck out two in the eighth before relinquishing the mound to Harry Stanwyck.
Stanwyck retired the side in the ninth, striking out two in the Aggies' 7-2 win.
Offensively, the Aggies were led by Johnson and Kalush who each recorded three hits. Johnson drove in two runs while scoring another while Kalush tripled to lead off the fifth.
UC Davis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after David Popkins doubled into left center field, then Paul Politi hit a line drive off Highlander pitcher Dylan Stuart's glove to reach first and move Popkins to third. Nick Lynch's base hit scored Popkins, then Johnson's double into left center field scored both Lynch and Politi.
Three more runs in the third gave UC Davis a 6-0 lead. Evan Heptig drove in the first run as he drew a bases-loaded walk. Tino Lipson's line drive shot off the glove of Highlander first baseman Vince Gonzalez and drifted into shallow right field, allowing Kalush and Brett Morgan to score.
The Aggies tacked on an additional run in the fifth after Kalush led off with a triple, then scored on Heptig's ground out.
The lone Highlander runs came in the sixth inning when an error on Politi at third base allowed two runs to cross.
UC Davis and UC Riverside continue action on Saturday at 6 p.m.
