DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team added a third straight win and moved within one victory of clinching the No. 2 seed in the Big West Championships after a 5-2 win over Pacific on Thursday at Hall Nelson Tennis Courts.
The Aggies improved to 10-11 on the season with a 5-2 mark in conference play. With one match remaining on season, UC Davis plays at home on Apr. 21 against Cal State Fullerton, who started the week winless in conference play. The Tigers dropped to 4-14 on the season with a 1-6 mark in league matches.
The Aggies started by taking the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and 3 positions. Megan Heneghan and Ellie Edles took the first win of the day for UC Davis, defeating Gergana Boncheva and Summer Irvin in the No. 2 spot, 8-2. Dahra Zamudio and Nicole Koehly had the deciding win in doubles by downing Susan Te and Regina Suarez, 8-4.
UC Davis added four wins in straight sets to run away with the match, three of which came before a Pacific win. Layla Sanders was perfect in singles action, blanking Irvin in the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-0. Kelly Chui also had a convincing victory, surrendering just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Te in the No. 3 spot.
Heneghan provided the clinching victory, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 1 position against Julia Hansen. Lauren Curry added a straight-set victory in the No. 4 position, defeating Boncheva, 6-1, 6-2.
The Aggies will look to close out the regular season on Saturday, Apr. 21, hosting Cal State Fullerton in a 11 a.m. match as UC Davis celebrates two seniors, Dahra Zamudio and Noelle Eades.
