DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis continued to climb in the Big West standings after taking a 5-2 win over No. 66 UC Irvine on Saturday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The Aggies started with the doubles point before adding three straight-set singles victories in the convincing conference win. UC Davis improved to 8-11 overall with a 4-2 Big West mark while the Anteaters dropped their second consecutive match and fell to 13-7 with a 5-2 league record.
Layla Sanders and Kelly Chui got the Aggies started on the right note by cruising to an 8-1 doubles win over the pair of Courtney Brown and Hannah Holladay. Dahra Zamudio and Nicole Koehly managed to secure the doubles point after downing Ali Facey and Kat Facey, 8-4.
UC Davis carried momentum over into singles play, where they cleaned up in the No. 2 through 5 positions. Zamudio made quick work of Courtney Byron in the No. 2 spot, taking a 6-1, 6-3 win for the first singles victory. UC Irvine managed to take the next two matches to even the score but the Aggies won in the remaining contests.
Sanders battled in the first set before rolling over Stephanie Hammel in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win at the No. 5 position. Chui provided the deciding victory by defeating Franziska Goettsching in the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-4. Lauren Curry rounded out the singles matches with a come from behind win in the No. 4 position against Kat Facey, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The Aggies will step out of conference play tomorrow, playing host to San Jose State in a 2 p.m. match.
