RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team posted a convincing 6-1 victory over UC Riverside, complete with five straight-set singles wins on Sunday at the Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts.
The Aggies improved to 5-9 on the season with a 2-2 mark in Big West play while the Highlanders dropped to 2-9 and 0-4 in league competition.
UC Davis started by dominating the doubles matches, as UC Riverside did not win more than three games in any match. Kelly Chui and Megan Heneghan managed an 8-3 win over the team of Raney/Raney at the No. 1 position. Layla Sanders and Ellie Edles added an 8-2 win at the No. 2 spot while Nicole Koehly and Dahra Zamudio cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Aggies continued their momentum into singles play, where the Highlanders won no more than two games in nine out of 10 sets. Melissa Kobayakawa was perfect in singles competition, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position while Edles added a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 spot. Zamudio and Chui had identical wins, earning 6-2, 6-1 victories in the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Heneghan added the final singles win at the No. 1 position, downing Jamie Raney, 6-1, 6-4.
UC Davis will have next week off, before playing a single midweek match at Pacific on Thursday, Mar. 15 at 2 p.m.
