HONOLULU, Hawaii - The UC Davis women's tennis team battled with one of the top Division II teams in the nation, using four singles victories to take home a 4-3 win over No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex.
After falling behind in the doubles point the Aggies surged for straight-set victories in four consecutive singles matches. The Sea Warriors had two nationally ranked singles players that each managed three-set wins after the match was decided. UC Davis improved to 6-10 on the season while Hawai'i Pacific dropped to 12-4 at the neutral site.
HPU started the afternoon with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles to secure the first point. Dahra Zamudio and Nicole Koehly added an 8-3 win at the No. 3 position against the team of Lea Kruse-Utermann and Zora Vlckova.
Lauren Curry got the Aggies started in singles play by making quick work of Vivian Hansen, taking a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot. In the No. 2 position Zamudio managed a 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Celina Goetti. UC Davis continued to extend its lead with a win for Koehly, who cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Carrie Shuler in No. 6 singles.
Kelly Chui made it four consecutive singles wins, providing the clinching victory with a win against Magdelena Smejova in the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-4. Megan Heneghan and Ellie Edles each fell in three sets to their respective ranked opponents.
The Aggies return to Big West competition next week, hosting Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, Apr. 4 at 2 p.m.
