KANE'OHE, Hawaii - Sophomore Jessica Chulya shot a 2-over 74 in Tuesday's first round on her way to a tie for seventh after two rounds and pacing the No. 24 UC Davis women's golf team into fourth place after 36 holes of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational being hosted by the University of Hawai'i.
The Aggies are 32-over 608 after two rounds of the two-day tournament and are just six shots off the lead being held by Gonzaga (602). Texas A&M, ranked 12th, is one shot behind in second place while Coastal Carolina (607) is only one stroke in front of UC Davis which put together rounds of 298 and 310.
Texas State, ranked 48th, sits six shots behind the Aggies at 38-over 614. The tournament is being played at the 6,139-yard Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
Chulya, who was third at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown last October for her best finish this season, had a 77 in the afternoon and is tied for seventh at 7-over 151. Juniors Demi Runas and Amy Simanton are tied for 13th at 9 over while freshmen Beverly Vatananugulkit and Blair Lewis are each tied for 34th at 12 over. Lewis had a team-best 75 in the second round.
Chulya opened her day with a 74, rebounding from a double-bogey on her first hole - the par-5 fourth - by playing par golf the rest of the day with two birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars. She had a birdie in the second round to help put her in a three-way tie for seventh in the individual standings.
Runas had the Aggies' best round of the day with her 73 in the first round. She was 2 over after 15 holes but birdied two of the final three holes on her way to 1 over. She shot 80 in the second round.
Simanton had a consistent round of 74 in the morning, stringing together 16 pars and just two bogeys. She ended her round with seven straight pars. She followed with a 79 in the afternoon.
Vatananugulkit had rounds of 77 and 79, highlighting her morning with two birdies, while Lewis opened with an 81 before battling back impressively to shoot 75 in her second round. Included in the comeback was a birdie, only four bogeys and 13 pars.
Coastal Carolina's Brittany Henderson had back-to-back rounds of 72 for par-144 and has a two-lead over both Tai Jade Kliephipat of Gonzaga and Kayla Mortellaro if Idaho.
The tournament's 14 teams will play a shotgun round on Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. (PDT). The Aggies will play with Hawai'i, Coastal Carolina and North Texas.
