BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Brett Morgan went 2-for-4 to extend his five-game hitting streak and freshman Kevin Barker was 3 of 4 with a double and an RBI, but CSU Bakersfield took a 7-4 victory at Hardt Field in Sunday's series finale.
UC Davis saw its four-game winning streak snapped, but sits at 5-2 for the year while CSU Bakersfield moves to 4-3 overall.
Roadrunner starter Taylor Aikenhead threw his second consecutive complete game, giving up nine hits and four runs, only two of which were earned, to the Aggies. He struck out four UC Davis batters while walking only one. He moves to 2-0 on the year.
For UC Davis, Tom Briner allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four in six complete innings and was replaced by Craig Lanza in the seventh. Lanza allowed three runs on three hits. Neither Aggie pitcher allowed a walk, however.
Morgan immediately got to work for UC Davis, leading off the game with a single, then stealing second base before coming around to score on an RBI base hit from Paul Politi to give the Aggies an early 1-0 lead.
The Roadrunners responded, putting two runs up in the bottom half of the first when Cael Brockmeyer hit a two-run home run to left field. His shot scored Jordie Hein who reached base after leading off the inning with a double down the left field line.
Barker tied the game for UC Davis after his double into left center field allowed Politi to score in the fourth inning. The Aggie third baseman singled into right field to start the inning and went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI for the day.
Despite being held hitless on the day, David Popkins' sacrifice fly in the fifth inning brought Brett Morgan home and gave UC Davis a 3-2 lead.
CSU Bakersfield took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Roadrunners started the inning with three straight singles, and the third allowed Hein to score, tying the game at three runs apiece. Kevin Younger put the Roadrunners up 4-3 after scoring on Stuart Smith's sacrifice fly.
Smith then gave the Roadrunners the lead for good when, in the bottom of the eighth, he hit CSU Bakersfield's second home run of the day. His two-run shot down the right field line put the Roadrunners up 7-3.
UC Davis tacked on another run in the top of the ninth when Mike Mazzara, in his UC Davis debut, hit a sacrifice fly into left center field to bring home Nick Lynch for the 7-4 final score.
The Aggies close out their current five-game road trip with a short trip to Stanford on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
