PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Junior Amy Simanton and freshman Beverly Vatananugulkit each shot final-round 9-over 80's on Wednesday as the No. 21 UC Davis women's golf team finished 14th at the highly competitive Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, hosted by Ohio State at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

It was a difficult day for UC Davis which shot 323 on Wednesday for a three-round 83-over 935 total. Junior Demi Runas, who led the Aggies with a 42nd-place finish, had an 81 on the last day, sophomore Jessica Chulya shot an 82 and freshman Blair Lewis had an 88.

The final day was tough for most of the 15-team field with just three teams bettering their scores from Tuesday's second round. Top-ranked UCLA, which was just 2 over entering the day, finished 18-over 870 after shooting 300 on Wednesday. The Bruins' performance, however, was good enough for them to claim the tournament title with a 12-shot victory over No. 4 USC (882).

Pepperdine, ranked 34th, took third (887), No. 8 Arizona State (891) was fourth and 18th-ranked Duke (897) rounded out the top five. UC Davis was just four shots behind No. 25 Oklahoma (931) which was 13th while No. 43 Wake Forest (937) placed two shots behind the Aggies.

The tournament was one of the deepest fields this season with every team ranked in Golfstat's top 50 and three among the top 10.

Simanton lost five strokes to par quickly in her round but then settled to post pars on six of her next nine holes and then grab a birdie on the course's par-4 13th hole. She tied for 55th at 24-over. Vatananugulkit picked up the Aggies' only other birdie on Wednesday when she shot a 2 on the eighth hole. That put her just 2 over but she lost seven strokes down the stretch to match Simanton with an 81 while placing in a tie for 65th at 26 over.

Runas, who had 74 and 75 in her first two rounds, had eight pars on Wednesday, ending the tournament 17 over. Chulya tied for 52nd at 22-over after also collecting eight pars in the final round. Lewis, who had an impressive 1-over 72 on Tuesday, was just 6 over after 10 holes before coming in 26 over for the week, tying for 69th place.

UCLA's Lindy Duncan, who led after the second round, shot a 1-under 70 over the final 18 holes and posted a four-shot win over Sophia Popov of USC. Duncan finished 3 under for the tournament and was the only player in the red.

The Aggies will return to action on Feb. 27-28 when they travel to San Jose State's Juli Inkster Invitational.
