Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Sydnee Fipps scored a career-high 19 points, hitting 9-of-10 from the free throw line, while freshman Molly Greubel scored 16 points in her collegiate debut, but the UC Davis women's basketball team fell 83-68 to Pepperdine on Friday at The Pavilion in Davis.

Friday's game marked the season opener for both teams. UC Davis drops to 0-1, losing its season opener for the first time since the 2006-07 season, while Pepperdine moves to 1-0.

Fipps' 19 points came on 5-of-7 shooting from the field as well as an impressive performance from the free throw line as she hit 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed four rebounds.

Greubel likewise had a strong shooting day in her first game in an Aggie uniform. She hit 3-of-4 from the field, including two three-pointers, and made 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Idit Oryon finished in double-digit scoring for UC Davis as well with a career-high 12 points, hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. She had a game-high four steals.

Fipps scored the first six points of the game for UC Davis but Pepperdine went 3-for-3 from three-point range to take a 9-6 lead, then used an 8-0 run to go up 18-6 with 13:13 left in the first half.

Aniya Baker broke Pepperdine's stretch with a bucket at the 12:29 mark, then Greubel hit back-to-back treys to cut into Pepperdine's lead, sparking a 15-4 Aggie run. UC Davis pulled to within two at 31-29 after Oryon hit a three with four minutes to play.

UC Davis closed the half with a jumper by Emily Vann in the lane to take 36-34 deficit into halftime.

The Aggies shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, hitting 3-of-6 from long range, and went 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

Fipps got the second half started in the same way as the first, scoring five quick points. She was fouled on a layup attempt, then hit the ensuing free throw for a successful three-point play, then was fouled again and made both free throws to keep UC Davis within three points.

From there, however, Pepperdine began to pull away after Bria Richardson took a steal coast-to-coast and hit a jumper in the lane. Ea Shoustari's trey with 13:32 left in the game put Pepperdine up by seven points at 46-39, but UC Davis would hold the Waves there briefly. Celia Marfone made a free throw, then Oryon sank another three-point shot to pull the Aggies back to within three.

Pepperdine built a double-digit lead over the next seven minutes, going up 62-51 with 5:30 to play. Fipps' second and-one of the night brought the Aggies to within eight, but Shoustari hit another three, her third of the night, to keep Pepperdine up by 11 with 4:16 to play.

The Waves outscored the Aggies 16-12 down the stretch to claim the 83-68 victory.

Robie Mayberry led all scorers with 22 points as four Pepperdine players finished in double digits. Shoustari had 17 while Shay Cooney-Williams and Richardson had 15 and 11, respectively.

Brianna Salvatore grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Alyson Doherty had six boards.

UC Davis begins a three-game road trip on Wednesday, Nov. 14 as the Aggies travel to face San Francisco at 7 p.m.
