TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC Davis women's tennis team started the season off right with a 7-0 sweep of Northern Arizona Friday in a match hosted by Arizona State at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Aggies, who started the season with a No. 59 ITA national ranking, downed the Lubmerjacks after taking two out of three doubles matches and winning all but one singles matches in straight sets. Friday's contest served as the first match of the season for both squads.
After NAU took its lone victory in the No. 2 doubles match, UC Davis bounced back with a pair of wins. Megan Heneghan and Kelly Chui defeated the team of Perez/Wahinepio, 8-3, in the No. 1 spot. Lauren Curry and Ellie Edles followed with an 8-6 win over Pacaut/Walker to secure the doubles point.
Heneghan had the first singles win of the season, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Hannah Stone in the No. 2 position. Dahra Zamudio held down the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mailia Wahinepio. Chui earned the deciding victory after downing Nicole Perez in the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-2.
Curry and Edles took victories in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-1 in their respective matches. Nicole Koehly also posted a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory in the No. 5 position to complete the match sweep.
The Aggies will be back in action tomorrow, playing the host school No. 19 Arizona State at 11 a.m.
