Final Stats
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Casey Wollbrinck and Emily Mecke each scored for the second straight day but host Providence was able to put in the winning goal in the 65th minute as it edged UC Davis 3-2 in a nonconference women's field hockey game on Wednesday evening.
The Aggies are 2-2 after going 1-2 on their east coast roadtrip with both losses coming by 3-2 outcomes that weren't decided until the final minutes. Providence, which received votes in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Preseason top 25 poll, is 1-3.
UC Davis was able to battle back from a pair of one-goal deficits on Wednesday, tying the game 2-2 in the 55th minute on Mecke's goal which came off a deflected pass from Kristen Lopez.
The game was tied for the next 10 minutes before Kaleigh Fitzpatrick, on a scramble in front of the cage, put in the eventual game-winning shot with 5 minutes, 3 seconds left on the clock.
Marissa Hughes and Nadia Namdari each got shots on goal in the final three minutes for UC Davis but Friars goalie Shannon DiStefano made saves each time. DiStefano had seven saves in the game.
Providence had gotten on the scoreboard first, picking up an unassisted goal from Brittany Ross in the 18th minute. But Wollbrinck, who had a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 3-1 win at Bryant, scored off a direct corner with Amanda Marinac and Lopez credited with the assists.
Ross struck again barely over a minute later on a cross from the left side, giving Providence a 2-1 lead it would take into halftime and then hold until Mecke's game-tying score with just 16 minutes to go.
UC Davis finished with 13 shots, including 10 on goal. Wollbrinck had four shots while Hughes had three. Lopez's assists pushed her team-high total to three for the season. Conley Craven had five saves in goal.
Mecke's goal was her team-high third.
The Aggies will return to UC Davis and prepare for a trip to the midwest next week when they face Indiana, William & Mary and Miami (Ohio) beginning Sept. 15.
