DAVIS, Calif. - Ashley Edwards' goal from in front of the cage in the game's 34th minute proved to be the difference as the UC Davis women's soccer team beat Sacramento State 1-0 in a Causeway Classic showdown between the local rivals at Aggie Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
The victory improved UC Davis' nonconference record to 2-1 while the Hornets dropped to 1-3. It was also the Aggies' second straight win over Sacramento State and improved the program's record against the Hornets to 4-0-1 since 2007.
The win also delivered UC Davis the first five points in this year's Causeway Cup competition between the two schools. The Aggies have won the all-sports award each of the last two years.
UC Davis used good defense and a deep roster to help post Sunday's win, allowing just three shots overall while utilizing eight players off the bench. The Aggies managed 15 shots but only four on goal, yet it was a good opportunity late in the first half which pushed them into the lead.
Bridget Berman pushed a ball ahead to the center of the box where Edwards was able to get her left foot on it and push it into the left side of the net. It was her first goal of the year.
The Aggies were able to keep the Hornets without many opportunities the rest of the matchup although Sacramento State had a solid chance with approximately 29 minutes remaining in the game that was thwarted out in front by Rachel Kahn and Aisha Lott before the ball could roll into the cage.
"It's a big game," said head coach MaryClaire Robinson. "It's a nonconference game but it's not an everyday nonconference game. You know that the stakes are higher and that there's going to be more fight there."
Going deep into her bench allowed Robinson to keep players fresh on a warm afternoon.
"We had depth and all sorts of substitutions," said Robinson. "I was very pleased with the bench. One of things we also talked about was when you come in, whether you're on the bench or not, can you bring some energy? And I thought we did a really good job of that."
Savannah Abercrombie had two saves during the game for Sacramento State while Maria Magana had two for UC Davis.
The Aggies will have a week off before returning to action next Sunday at San Jose State.
