2010-11 Year In Review

DAVIS, Calif. - The first edition of the 2010-11 UC Davis Athletics Year In Review is now available here at ucdavisaggies.com, both in the interactive ISSUU format and as a traditional, printer-friendly PDF download.

Serving as an annual report of the Aggie athletics year, the document includes a complete listings of major awards, school records and other milestones and achievements.

UC Davis enjoyed a strong overall year, capturing six team conference championships and claiming 13 All-America awards. Additionally, nine Aggie teams were represented in the NCAA postseason, amassing 106.5 points toward the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup.

Of particular note, the teams posted an overall record of 204-203-2 record, marking the first time in the Division I era that the Aggies collectively finished with a winning ledger. The last overall winning year was 2003-04, the first year of the Division I reclassification period and the last in which UC Davis faced mostly Division II competition.

In addition to the accomplishments of current Aggies, two former UC Davis student-athletes reached singular firsts for the program. Scott Gordon, who entered the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame this year, became the first Aggie golfer to earn his PGA Tour card. Last September, Daniel Descalso earned the call-up from Triple-A Memphis to St. Louis Cardinals, becoming the first UC Davis student-athlete to bat in a major-league game. Descalso made the big club's 25-man roster this year and -- as of this release -- has played in 76 of the Cardinals' 82 games.

Finally, the 2010-11 year also saw the retirement of two key department figures. Women's basketball coach Sandy Simpson stepped down from his post, but not before guiding the Aggies to its first appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament. And Greg Warzecka bid farewell after a 16-year tenure at the helm, one that featured some of the most significant milestones in UC Davis athletics' history.
