BRYAN, Texas - Amy Simanton was 2 under for her final 17 holes on Friday, fired a 1-under 71 and is tied for 16th to lead the 14th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team after three rounds of the NCAA Division I Championships at Traditions Golf Club.
The Aggies shot a 19-over 307 on Friday and are tied for 23rd with Notre Dame at 61-over 925. Second-ranked UCLA, one of six teams on the course when play was suspended due to darkness, holds a six-shot lead over defending champion Purdue. The Bruins are currently at 13-over.
LSU and Virginia are tied for third at 26-over. All team and individual standings are unofficial pending the official end of the third round on Saturday morning.
Senior Alice Kim finished with a 77 during the third round, senior Chelsea Stelzmiller had a 79, sophomore Demi Runas posted an 80 and freshman Jessica Chulya carded an 83.
Simanton's good round helped move her from a tie for 30th after Thursday and into the top 20. Runas is tied for 81st and Kim is tied for 99th while Stelzmiller and Chulya are 111th and tied for 116th, respectively.
Simanton has enjoyed a solid championship, opening with a 73 before posting 76 on Thursday. She bogeyed her first hole on Friday but then played impressively the rest of the way, carding birdies on the par-5 eighth hole and concluding par-5 18th while collecting pars on 15 of the remaining 16 holes.
Kim had her lowest round of the tournament, playing her back nine just 2 over with seven pars. She had a birdie on the front nine, finishing with a 77. Stelzmiller's 79 featured eight pars on the front nine and three straight to end the day, Runas was 4 over on both the front and back nines while Chulya played her final nine holes at 4 over.
UCLA's Tiffany Lua is 5 under and has a three-shot lead over Marta Silva Zamora of Georgia and Austin Ernst of LSU but still has four holes left in her second round. Just four players are currently under par.
Besides UCLA, Purdue and LSU, other teams that were still on the course when play was suspended were Florida, Tennessee and Cal.
The two-time defending Big West champion Aggies will conclude their second appearance at the NCAA Championship on Saturday when they tee off at 6:30 a.m. (Pacific). They'll play with Coastal Carolina and Notre Dame.
