Gross Adds Klemin To Coaching Staff

May 13, 2011

DAVIS, Calif. - Matt Klemin, most recently on the women's basketball staff at Vanguard University, has been named assistant coach at UC Davis it was announced on Friday by Jennifer Gross, the Aggies' new head coach.

Klemin joins the staff after spending the last two seasons at Vanguard University in Southern California where he helped direct the Lions' defense, served as recruiting coordinator and prepared scouting reports.

"Matt is going to be a wonderful additional to our staff," said Gross. "Not only is he a talented skill development coach and a tremendous tactician, but he is also well-versed in various styles of play and brings a wide range of experience to the program.

"Most importantly," she added. "Matt shares my philosophy for developing a strong team culture and building great relationships. He is a positive role model who is going to help our student-athletes succeed in all aspects of their lives."

Klemin's tenure at Vanguard followed one season at Azusa Pacific University and two years at Cal Baptist where he was involved in all aspects of the two NAIA programs. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Big West member Cal Poly from 2004-06.

Klemin has also gained valuable experience coaching at the high school and club level and at several camps including those at Cal, UC Santa Barbara and the University of San Francisco.

Klemin earned his bachelor's degree in graphic communications from Cal Poly in 2005, adding a master's degree in education administration a year later.

Gross announced Klemin's addition to her staff after assuming duties as head coach last month. Gross, a member of the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, returned to her alma mater as assistant coach in 2004 and was later elevated to associate head coach.

She was named head coach beginning with the 2011-12 season when former head coach Sandy Simpson announced last October his retirement from coaching following this past season. He garnered a program-best 251 wins.

Gross and her staff look to build on a memorable 2010-11 season when UC Davis captured a Big West Tournament championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament where they fell to second-ranked Stanford. The Aggies return 10 letterwinners and three starters to next year's team.
