DAVIS, Calif. - Senior left-handed pitcher Scott Chew gave up only four hits in a complete game shutout in his first start of the 2011 season as UC Davis took a 5-0 win on Wednesday against Santa Clara at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.
UC Davis improves to 16-27 overall and the Aggies have won seven of their last 10 games. Santa Clara drops to 17-28.
Chew used only 92 pitches to shut out the Broncos and faced only one batter over the minimum. He held Santa Clara hitless until the fourth inning and only one of the four hits he allowed was a multiple-base hit as Blake Leyva hit a double to left field in the top of the ninth. He struck out only two batters, but retired the side four times and forced the Broncos to hit into 11 fly balls.
The Broncos' first hit of the game came in the fourth inning after Lucas Herbst singled with two outs, but Herbst was picked off as he attempted to steal second to end the inning. Patrick Terry led off the top of the fifth with a single, but was thrown out at second in the next at bat. UC Davis closed the inning by turning a double play off Drew Ozanne's grounder to short.
Chew retired the side in the sixth, allowed a two-out walk in the seventh, then gave up a base hit in the eighth, but the Aggie defense turned its second double play of the game to end that inning as well.
In the ninth, Chew forced Zach Looney into a ground ball to shortstop, then gave up the double to Leyva. He struck out Matt Ozanne for the second out of the inning, then closed the complete game by forcing Justin Viele to fly out to center field.
With the win, Chew moves to 1-0 on the year while Santa Clara's Cory Hall drops to 4-6 overall.
UC Davis scored early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Scott Lyman hit a ground ball to first base which allowed Brett Morgan to score. Morgan had led off the inning with a base hit, then moved to third on a double to right field by Scott Heylman.
Lyman put another run on the board for the Aggies in the fifth inning when his base hit brought in David Popkins to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Popkins doubled to left field, then Lyman singled in the next at bat to bring Popkins home.
Eric Johnson's bases-clearing triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh extended UC Davis' lead. Ryan Allgrove led off the inning with his third hit of the day, a single to left centerfield, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan. Heylman and Lyman each walked to load the bases with two outs, setting up Johnson's big hit into right center field.
Johnson finished 2-for-3 with three RBI while Allgrove went 3-for-4 with a run. Lyman's was 1-for-2 with two RBI while Popkins was 2-for-4 with a run.
UC Davis closes out the week with a three-game series at Cal Poly beginning Friday.
