INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The No. 3-seeded UC Davis women's tennis team was upended by No. 6 UC Irvine, 4-0, Friday in a quarterfinal match of the Big West Conference Championship at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Anteaters advance to face No. 7 Cal State Northridge tomorrow at 3 p.m. in a semifinal match. Cal State Northridge upset No. 2 Cal Poly in the first round of the tournament, defeating the Mustangs, 4-1.

No. 56-ranked UC Davis had a tough quarterfinal draw, facing the defending Big West Champions, as UC Irvine came into the match with a No. 59 ITA ranking. With the loss the Aggies closed out the season with a 17-7 overall record, while the Anteaters improved to 11-12 on the year.

UC Irvine started doubles competition with a win at the No. 1 position, as the team of Hannah Holladay and Rebecca Kwan downed Megan Heneghan and Kelly Chui, 8-3. UC Davis responded with a win after Ellie Edles and Nicole Koehly defeated Courtney Byron and Kristina Smith in No. 2 doubles, 8-4. The Anteaters managed to come away with the doubles point after Franziska Goettsching and Miranda Young took an 8-4 win over Dahra Zamudio and Lauren Curry at the No. 3 position.

The Anteaters carried the momentum into singles play, where they won the first three matches in straight sets. Brooke Schweyer started with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Koehly in the No. 5 position. Smith followed with another win for UC Irvine, defeating Zamudio, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. The Anteaters had the match in hand, as Byron went on to take the clinching victory at No. 1 singles by defeating Heneghan, 6-3, 6-2. The No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 matches did not finish.

Despite ending the season on a sour note, the Aggies had several program firsts in 2011. UC Davis received the first national ITA ranking in program history, climbing as high as 56. The Aggies defeated two ranked opponents on the season, with victories over No. 69 UC Irvine and No. 58 UC Santa Barbara earlier in the season.

The final 17-7 record for UC Davis is the most wins and highest win percentage the Aggies have had since reclassifying to Division I. UC Davis will lose two players to graduation but return the top six singles players from 2011 next season.
