RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. - Leader Alice Kim and third-place Demi Runas pace four Aggies in the top 10 as the 19th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team opened a 12-stroke lead after the second round Monday at the Big West Championships.
The defending champion Aggies led second-seeded Long Beach State by just one stroke after Sunday's opening round but posted a season-best 4-under 284 on Monday to open a double-digit advantage. UC Davis is 1-under 575 while the 49ers are at 11-over 587.
"The team is playing solid," said head coach Anne Walker. "It's our first under-par round of the year and for the team to fire that number on the second day of the conference championship shows the quality of this team."
Kim, who tied a course record with a 6-under 66 Sunday, was nearly as effective a day later, moving to 5 under after 13 holes, carding a 67. Runas had a second straight round of 70, Chelsea Stelzmiller carded a 73, Amy Simanton finished with a 74 and Jessica Chulya had a 76.
Kim has owned the course to the tune of 12 birdies and just one bogey over the first two rounds. She had four birdies in six holes on Monday and played the back nine 3 under.
At 11 under overall, Kim leads Monica Villareal of Long Beach State by six shots. Villareal fired a 72 in the second round.
Kim is joined near the top of the leaderboard by teammate Demi Runas who matched Sunday's play with another 70. She was 1 over after 12 holes but birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes pushed her two shots in the red which is where she ended the round.
Runas is six shots clear of UC Irvine's Lalita Patipaksiri who is fourth at 2-over 146. Runas, at 4 under, is one of just three players below par.
Stelzmiller, who moved into a tie for ninth along with Simanton and is the defending medalist, opened her day with a birdie on the par-5 1st and then added another on the 17th to card a 1-over 73. It was a five-shot improvement over her first-round score.
Simanton scrambled to a 2-over 38 on her front nine, posting four birdies and just one par, but played a steady back nine with a birdie and a bogey before ending with seven straight pars. She and Stelzmiller are at 7-over 151
Chulya had an early birdie and played her first nine holes just 1 over before six birdies on the back helped her post a 76, three shots better than her first-round score. She's tied for 18th.
Cal Poly moved in to third place at 19-over 595 while UC Irvine is fourth at 25-over 601, rounding out the top four.
The tournament is being contested at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club. The Aggies will play with Long Beach State and Cal Poly in Tuesday's final round. Those three teams will begin teeing off at 8:50 a.m.
