FRESNO, Calif. - Alice Kim and Demi Runas each shot par 72, Belen Hernandez fired a 73 and the 18th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team posted a tournament-best 4-over 292 on Tuesday as the Aggies posted a dominating 17-shot win at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
The Aggies had three players on its scoring team among the top six places with another - freshman Jessica Chulya who played as an individual - tying for eighth. Kim had a season-best second-place finish, finishing at 3-over 219, sophomore Amy Simanton was fourth at 6 over, and Runas tied for sixth at 8 over.
Senior Chelsea Stelzmiller tied for 21st at 15 over while Hernandez tied for 41st at 21 over. Chulya posted her top-10 placing with a combined score of 9-over 225.
The Aggies finished the 54-hole event at Copper River Country Club at 29-over 893, well ahead of second-place Cal Poly which was at 46-over 910. San Francisco (913), Portland State (916), Santa Clara (921) and UC Irvine (921) rounded out the top six positions.
The win was the first of the year for UC Davis which posted its sixth top-five finishing in its seven collegiate tournaments.
The Aggies roared to the win with its best effort of the week. Kim and Runas each combined three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars into their rounds of 72 while Hernandez, who had an 85 in the second round on Monday, had a big turnaround and had four birdies en route to her 1-over 73 on Wednesday.
Simanton carded three birdies in her round of 75, while Stelzmiller's 76 tied for her low round of the week as she finished strong with a birdie and four pars over her final five holes.
Chulya had a very steady round which featured two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars, including pars on her last seven holes. She played the front nine of the course one under.
First-day leader Katrina Hegge of San Francisco had a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, winning medalist honors by three shots over Kim.
The Aggies will return to competition on Mar. 20-22 at The Battle at Rancho Bernardino Inn in San Diego.
