FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Alice Kim fired par 72 in the first round and sophomore Amy Simanton shot a 73 in the second and both are tied for third for the 18th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team which leads the Fresno State Lexus Classic by 10 strokes after two rounds on Monday.
The defending champion Aggies opened with a 7-over 295 and followed with a 306 in the afternoon to take a double-digit lead over second-place San Francisco (611) going into Tuesday's final round. Cal Poly sits in third (613), Portland State (615) is fourth and Santa Clara is fifth (617).
Kim and Simanton are at 3-over 147 and just two shots behind first-day leader Katrina Hegge of San Francisco. The Aggies' Demi Runas - who had a 73 in the first round - is tied for eighth at 152, senior Chelsea Stelzmiller is tied for 19th at 155, and sophomore Belen Hernandez is tied for 57th at 164.
Freshman Jessica Chulya, playing as an individual also finds herself near the top of the leaderboard, tied for 11th at 153.
UC Davis is looking for its first tournament win of the 2010-11 season and is in strong position to win the two-day event for the second straight year as well. Kim helped get the Aggies off to a good start, making the turn at 3-under after a trio of birdies and no bogeys, eventually coming in at 72.
Runas also had a steady round, carding two birdies and 14 pars on her way to a 73, while Simanton had a birdie and 12 pars over her first 13 holes before posting a 74. UC Davis led Santa Clara by 10 strokes after the first round before tying for the second-best score in the afternoon.
Stelzmiller had a birdie in her first-round 76 while Hernandez had two during her 79, also in the morning. Chulya carded three birdies while shooting 76 over the opening 18 holes while garnering 12 pars over the second round.
The Aggies will play with San Francisco and Cal Poly in the final round which starts at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
