SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a tie for 11th from sophomore Amy Simanton and a tie for 16th from sophomore Demi Runas, the 18th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team posted a sixth-place finish on Tuesday at the Battle at Rancho Bernardo, hosted by San Diego State.
The 54-hole event was one of the toughest ones of the year for the Aggies who were facing a half-dozen teams ranked in the top 10 and 16 overall in the top 50. UC Davis, which fired a 308 team score in the final round, finished ahead of seventh-place Arizona (ranked eighth), 11th-place Arizona State (ranked ninth), and 13th-place Cal (ranked 10th).
UC Davis finished at 45-over 909 for the three-day event.
Seventh-ranked Purdue held the lead throughout Tuesday's play, capturing the title with a score of 15-over 879. Top-ranked USC (886) was second, No. 3 UCLA (887) was third and 20th-ranked Georgia (903) placed fourth. Auburn (905), ranked 22nd, was fifth.
Simanton posted her third straight top-15 finish for UC Davis after her round of 74, tying for 11th at 5-over 221. Runas tied for 16th at 8-over 224 while shooting 74 for the second time this week. Freshman Jessica Chulya tied for 47th at 16-over, Alice Kim tied for 51st at 17-over and Chelsea Stelzmiller tied for 75th at 26-over.
Purdue's Laura Gonzalez carded a final-round 68 to earn medalist honors, finishing at 7 under and winning by six strokes over Therese Koelbaek of UNLV and Lizette Salas of USC.
UC Davis began its final round on the 10th hole and Simanton started well. She had pars over the first six holes, and then balanced a subsequent bogey with a birdie on the par-5 18th to make her turn even. She then played her last nine holes two shots over par.
Runas was 4 over at her turn but played a strong front nine of the course with two birdies and seven pars to match Simanton for the Aggies' low score of the day. Kim shot a 79, Stelzmiller had an 81 and Chulya had a birdie during her round of 82.
UC Davis continued a season where it has finished sixth or better in all but one event.
The Aggies will return to action on Apr. 4-5 when they co-host with Oregon the inaugural Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at The Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Links.
