SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Amy Simanton and Demi Runas each shot 4-over 76's during Monday's second round of the Battle at Rancho Bernardo as the 18th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team remained with the leaders in fourth place.
The Aggies fired a collective team score of 307 on Monday and are at 25-over 601 with only Tuesday's final round remaining. Seventh-ranked Purdue, one of 16 teams ranked in Golfstat's top 50 entered in the event, took a seven-shot lead over top-ranked USC after posting a 4-over 292.
The Boilermakers are at 11-over 587 after 36 holes, ahead of USC (594) and third-ranked UCLA (597). UC Davis is currently in front of four teams ranked higher than itself, including three in the top 10.
Simanton, who had a 71 during Sunday's opening round, is in a four-way tie for fifth at 3-over 147, trailing leader Laura Gonzalez of Purdue who is 3 under. Sophomore Demi Runas and freshman Jessica Chulya are each tied for 15th at 6 over, senior Alice Kim is tied for 36th at 10 over and senior Chelsea Stelzmiller is tied for 69th at 17 over.
Simanton started her second round strong, carding a birdie on the par-3 second hole and then collecting pars over the next three holes to stay at 1 under after five. She made the turn even before eventually posting a 76. Runas was 3 over after nine holes and moved to 5 over later but had birdies on two of her final three holes - including the concluding par-5 18th - to bring her back in with a 76.
Chulya scrambled to 4 over on her front nine, posting two pars and two birdies along the way but had eight pars and just one bogey on the back to card a 77. Kim had a similar start, playing her first nine holes at 2 over despite just two pars before finishing with a 78. Stelzmiller was only 2 over after nine holes before ending with an 80.
The tournament features one of the deepest fields of the season for UC Davis which has been near the top of the leaderboard since teeing off at Rancho Bernardo Inn's Championship Course on Sunday.
UC Davis will tee off on the 10th hole beginning at 9:39 a.m. to start Tuesday's final round. The Aggies will play with Arizona and UNLV.
