TUCSON, Ariz. - Chelsea Stelzmiller fired a 2-over 74 during Tuesday's final round of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational at Vistoso Golf Club as the 28th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team charged to finish fifth after opening the round in ninth.
Windy conditions pushed final-round scores well above par throughout the 16-team tournament which was won by 11 shots by No. 7 Arizona. The Aggies, who were fifth after Monday's first round, shot 16-over 304 on Tuesday, ending the 54-hole event at 42-over 906.
Stelzmiller carded a 74 for the second consecutive round and tied for 22nd overall at 12-over 228. Senior Alice Kim tied for 15th despite shooting 81 in the final round. She had solid back-to-back 72s on Monday and was 9 over for the tournament.
Freshman Jessica Chulya shot 75 tying for 34th at 15-over, sophomore Demi Runas had a 77 and tied for 28th at 13-over and sophomore Amy Simanton was at 19-over after finishing with a 78 and placing 48th.
The host Wildcats posted a 303 team score on Tuesday and were at 11-over 875 overall, beating No. 8 Cal which had 312 and finished at 22-over 886. Arizona State (895) was third, 20 shots behind Arizona, while Stanford took fourth at 37-over 901.
Arizona's Isabelle Boineau had a 73, winning medalist honors at 4-under 212. She beat three players by two shots; Joanne Lee of Cal, Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho and Kristina Wong of Stanford.
Stelzmiller was 3 over after five holes but picked up two birdies, 10 pars and just one bogey the rest of the way to come in with a 74, Chulya, Kim and Simanton each had a birdie during the tough conditions while Runas had three during her round.
The Wildcat Invitational had six teams ranked among Golfstat's top 50.
The event was the first of the spring season for UC Davis which is off until participating in the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford on Feb. 19-20.
