TUCSON, Ariz. - Alice Kim posted a pair of par-72s on Monday during the first two rounds at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational while helping lead the No. 28 UC Davis women's golf team to a second-round 293 team score, a 16-shot improvement over its opening-round tally.
The Aggies, who are at 26-over 602, were 12th after the morning's play and are currently unofficially in ninth place. Play was suspended because of darkness during the final stages of the second round, leaving all current team and individual standings as unofficial until the round is completed on Tuesday.
UC Davis was one of eight teams to post an official score for each round, coming back strong in the afternoon after opening the 16-tournament with a 21-over 309. But each member of the Aggie quintet either equaled or bettered their first-round score during the second, highlighted by Kim who had a 72 and Demi Runas who carded a 73,
Chelsea Stelzmiller and Amy Simanton had 74s and Jessica Chulya finished with a 78. Only Kim and Chulya broke 80 during the first round.
Kim had four birdies and four bogeys during her even-par round in the morning but was much steadier in the afternoon, posting two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars. She's unofficially tied for ninth in the individual standings. Runas hovered near par most of her round, highlighting her afternoon with four birdies on her way to a just a shot over par and is in unofficially tied for 35th.
Stelzmiller and Simanton each had three birdies in the afternoon, improving their first-round scores by six and nine shots, respectively. Stelzmiller had a pair of biridies over a three-hole span in the second round while Simanton capped her day with nine straight pars. Chulya had five combined birdies in her two rounds.
Seventh-ranked Arizona and No. 9 Cal are the only two teams currently under par. The host Wildcats, who shot 2-under 286 in the first round, are at unofficially at 5 under while the Bears opened 4 under and are now at 3 under. Arizona State is well back in third, unofficially 19 shots behind Cal.
The Aggies are in a group of four teams that have each completed both rounds and are within four shots of each other in the middle of the leaderboard. Stanford, ranked 26th, is at 22-over and unofficially in sixth while UC Davis is four back and in ninth.
Players will complete the second round on Tuesday morning at 6:45 a.m. (PST) before starting the final round at 7:15. The tournament is being played at the 6,321-yard Vistoso Golf Club will start at 8 a.m
