STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Demi Runas tied for fourth, freshman Jessica Chulya tied for eighth and the No. 25 UC Davis women's golf team finished third on Sunday at the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Golf Course after posting the second-best team score of the final round.
The Aggies carded a collective 8-over 292 over the last 18 holes, trailing only ninth-ranked Cal's 287 which helped the Golden Bears to an overall score of 11-over 579. The host Cardinal, ranked 27th, took second at 29-over 297 while the Aggies were third at 31-over 599.
The tournament was suspended midway through its first round on Saturday. The 10-team field finished that round on Sunday morning before completing final 18 holes.
Runas led the Aggies with her top-five finish, tying for fourth with Sally Watson and Kristina Wong of Stanford at 5-over 147. Chulya tied for eighth at 7-over 149, sophomore Amy Simanton - who led UC Davis with a 1-over 72 in the last round - tied for 19th at 152, and seniors Alice Kim and Chelsea Stelzmiller tied for 24th at 153.
Emily Childs of Cal earned medalist honors at 2-under 140 afer shooting 67 in the last round, beating teammate Daniela Holmqvist by three shots. Washington's Anya Alvarez also fired a 67 on Sunday afternoon, placing third at 145.
Runas had a pair of birdies in each round, opening with a 74 before closing with a 73. Chulya also had a 3-over 74 over the opening 18 holes, using five birdies and seven pars to help counter four birdies and two double-bogeys.
Simanton had an early double-bogey in her second round and went to 3 over before back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes helped rally her back to an impressive round of 72. Kim had a 73 on Sunday afternoon, picking up two birdies, while Stelzmiller also had a pair while shooting 74.
Belen Hernandez, playing as an individual along with teammate Katie Sisler, finished tied for third at 161 while Sisler tied for 56th at 166.
UC Davis will return to action on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1 at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at San Jose State.
