Final Stats
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - UC Davis outshot host La Salle 23-6 overall, including having nine more shots on goal, but the Explorers scored the game's only goal for a 1-0 nonconference women's field hockey win on Saturday morning.
The Aggies fell to 2-8 while La Salle upped its overall record to 5-7. Mariel Papa ended the scoreless game in 45th minute, picking up her fourth goal of the season. La Salle goalie Lisa Shaffer made 12 saves.
The offensive stats were predominantly in favor of UC Davis even though the first half of the game was scoreless. The Aggies launched 12 shots over the first 35 minutes while only allowing the Explorers one; that not coming until the 24th minute.
UC Davis had eight shots on goal in the first half including five in the final 7 minutes, 7 seconds before the break. However, Shaffer saved all of them to help keep the teams even going into the second half.
The Aggies came out after intermission and took three shots in the first four minutes, two of them on goal, but it was Papa who took advantage of a rare scoring opportunity for La Salle. She took a cross from Lindsay Fry and scored to the far side of the cage nine minutes into the half.
UC Davis had seven shots the rest of the game but were unable to get any by Shaffer.
The Aggies finished with 12 shots on goal, allowed just three and dominated in penalty corners, 18-3. Casey Wollbrink had seven shots, Lydia Brambila had five and Nadia Namdari tallied four, getting three of them on goal.
"This was a tough loss. We really dominated in stats but lacked the ability to control the attitude and momentum of the game," said Aggie coach Vianney Campos. "Not being a young team anymore means that we have to find a way to set the tone from start to finish. La Salle had a great game and really capitalized on our weaknesses.
"All we can do is gain insight from this and continue to prepare for the next games and the NorPac Tournament, which to us is the most important."
UC Davis will try to snap its seven-game losing streak when it concludes its roadtrip on Sunday at 9 a.m. (PDT). The game will feature live stats and live video.
