Oct. 6, 2011

Final Stats

SPRING CITY, Pa. - Britt Knouse had three goals and a assist on Thursday afternoon as Virginia, the third-ranked team in the preesason national poll, beat UC Davis 8-1 in a nonconference women's field hockey game played on a neutral site at Spring City, Pa.

UC Davis fell to 2-7 on the season while the Cavaliers improved to 6-7. Both teams are receiving votes in this week's Kookaburra/NFHCA top 20 poll. Lydia Brambila picked up the Aggies' lone score.

Two quick goals by Virginia in the game's opening minutes, one of them coming off an assist from Krouse, put it in front 2-0 but Brambila answered just 39 seconds after the second score to make it 2-1. Brambila scored when she rebounded her own penalty shot in the fifth minute, tallying her first goal of the season

The game remained a one-goal match for the next 10 minutes before Knouse deflected a pass from Elly Buckley into the goal for the first of three Cavalier goals over the following nearly nine minutes that helped push the lead to 5-1 at halftime. Carissa Viettese and Buckley added the other goals.

Knouse scored the next two goals for Virginia, including the first of two by Virginia in less than a minute's span during the 48th minute that helped provide the final score.

UC Davis had 11 shots in the game, including five on goal, while Amanda Marinac had a defensive save. Virginia finished with 21 shots, 13 of them on goal.

The Aggies will continue their roadtrip on Saturday when they play at La Salle and will finish the weekend with a nonconference game at Penn on Sunday morning.
