GOLF, Ill. - Junior Amy Simanton birdied a pair of par-five holes late in her final round on Tuesday to help her shoot 2-under 70 and tie for ninth place as the No. 11 UC Davis women's golf team moved up to tie for sixth at the Windy City Collegiate Championship hosted by Northwestern.
The Aggies opened the day in a ninth-place tie but fired an 8-over 296 - the sixth-best team score of the day - to finish 36-over 900 and in a logjam for sixth with No. 20 Northwestern and Wake Forest. Kent State and No. 32 Tulsa were just one shot behind.
Fourth-ranked Oklahoma State (882) held off No. 47 Arizona (883) for a one-shot victory.
Simanton had bogeys on her first two holes on Tuesday but then rallied to play the remainder of her round four shots under par. She birdied three par-five holes altogether, including her 15th and 17th holes, to help push her in the red.
Her score tied her career best which she also had in the last round of the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate last April. She finished 4-over 220 this week, tying for ninth and leading the Aggies.
Junior Demi Runas had her best round of the tournament, posting a 1-over 73 and tying for 21st at 8-over 224. Sophomore Jessica Chulya shot 75 and tied for 35th at 12 over, and freshmen Blair Lewis and Beverly Vatananugulkit each finished with a 78, tying for 46th at 14 over and 66th at 20 over, respectively.
Ohio State, ranked 45th, finished two shots (884) behind Oklahoma State while No. 28 TCU (898) and top-ranked Texas (899) completed the top five finishers. Fifteen teams - 11 of them ranked in Golfstat's top 50 - participated in the tournament which was played at the 6,333-yard Glen View Club.
Runas had a steady round, carding a birdie, just two bogeys and 15 pars including eight straight pars to end her day. Chulya also finished with 15 pars, playing her back nine just a shot over par. Lewis was just 1 over entering her final four holes before coming in with a 78 and Vatananugulkit highlighted her day by playing her front nine holes just two shots over par.
Isabelle Boineau of Arizona had the day's best round, a 4-under 68, and tied for medalist honors with Kelsey Vines of Oklahoma State who shot a 71. Both players finished 2 under during the tournament.
The Aggies' No. 11 ranking is a program-best. They'll return to competition on Oct. 14 when they participate in the three-day Stanford Intercollegiate.
