Lewis Shoots 73 As Aggies End Day In 11th

Oct. 3, 2011

Results and Live Scoring

GOLF, Ill. - Freshman Blair Lewis fired a 1-over 73 in Monday's second round - UC Davis' best round of the day - as the No. 11 Aggie women's golf team finished the first two rounds of the Windy City Collegiate Championship in 11th place.

The Aggies had scores of 305 and 299 and are 28-over 604 going into Tuesday's final 18 holes. Lewis' solid round paced UC Davis in the afternoon while junior Demi Runas' 75 was best in the morning.

Junior Amy Simanton had consistent rounds of 76 and 74 and is tied for 24th at 6-over 150. Runas is tied for 28th a shot back, Lewis is tied for 34th at 8 over, sophomore Jessica Chulya is tied for 38th at 9 over and freshman Beverly Vatananugulkit is tied for 64th at 14 over.

Fourth-ranked Oklahoma State, one of 11 teams ranked in Golfstat's top 50 that is participating in the tournament being hosted by Northwestern, is 13 over and has a six-shot lead over No. 47 Arizona (595), and is in front of No. 45 Ohio State (596) by seven. New Mexico, ranked 37th, and No. 20 Northwestern are tied for fourth at 22 over.

"Tough conditions and challenging greens were the theme of today," said Aggie coach Anne Walker. "With the knowledge we gathered today, I believe we will be better tomorrow."

Lewis, a freshman from La Mesa, Calif., opened her day with a 79 but then battled back in the second round by posting two birdies and playing 13-hole stretch two shots under par. She had two bogeys over her final three holes or else would've finished in the red.

Simanton played her back nine even during the opening 18 holes and then finished well with a birdie and four pars over the last five holes of her second round. Runas was just one shot over par on her back nine in her morning round of 75 and had three birdies to help highlight her 76 in the second.

Chulya had two birdies in the first round and then one in the second - that coming on her front nine when she covered the holes even - to post scores of 77 and 76. Vatananugulkit enjoyed her most success of the day on the first nine holes she played, going just one over, and had a birdie in the second round. She had a 77 and then an 81 on Monday.

Kristina Merkle of Tulsa had back-to-back rounds of 71 and is two under to lead all players in the 15-team tournament. She holds a one-shot lead over two others.

The Aggies will play with Tulsa and top-ranked Texas on Tuesday. They'll tee off beginning at 5:48 (PDT).
