Simanton, Chulya Lead Aggies In Second Round At Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Amy Simanton had three birdies on her back nine to help with a 1-under 70 while sophomore Jessica Chulya fired a 71 as the No. 21 UC Davis women's golf team moved up a spot Saturday and is 12th after 36 holes at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

The Aggies cut five shots from their first-round score to card a 3-over 287 and are 11-over 579 for the tournament. Simanton's strong round put her even after two rounds and in a tie for 23rd place while Chulya's score was a nine-shot improvement from Friday and helped her into 71st place.

Freshman Blair Lewis, junior Demi Runas and freshman Beverly Vatananugulkit each had good rounds of 73 and are tied for 36th, 41st and 67th, respectively.

Top-ranked UCLA broke a first-place tie with Washington and now own a four-shot lead over No. 10 Vanderbilt heading into Sunday's final round. The Bruins are 10 under. Oregon, ranked 29th, is 5 under and in third while No. 8 USC and No. 36 Washington are 4 under and tied for fourth.

UC Davis trails No. 9 Texas and No. 38 San Diego, who are tied for 10th, by just two strokes and are three ahead of host Stanford, ranked 50th, which is 13th. The tournament features one of the strongest fields of the year with 14 teams ranked in the top 50, including six in the top 10.

Starting on the 10th hole, Amy Simanton enjoyed a steady start, posting pars on her first 11 holes. Two bogeys, a birdie and a par on her next four put her 1 over but birdies on the par-5 7th and the par-3 8th preceded a par on her last hole, bringing her in with a 71.

Chulya had four birdies including two each on her front and back nines to help spark her round which featured a 1-under 34 over her final nine holes. Runas was 1 over on both her front and back nines while Lewis and Vatananugulkit each had four birdies to help highlight their day.

Cassy Isagawa of Oregon and SooBin Kim of Washington are both 8 under after two rounds after firing 67 and 68, respectively, on Saturday. They have a two-shot lead on their closest competitors.

The Aggies will tee of the final round at Stanford Golf Course on Sunday morning beginning at 7:30. UC Davis will play with San Diego State and Texas.
