Results and Live Scoring
STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Blair Lewis rebounded from an early double-bogey with three birdies and nine straight pars later in her round on her way to par 71 as the No. 21 UC Davis women's golf team finished the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate in 13th place.
The Aggies are just eight shots over par as a team at the 6,148-yard Stanford Golf Course but the high-caliber tournament features four top-10 teams and 13 in the top 50 so scores went low in Friday's opening round.
Lewis is tied for 25th while juniors Amy Simanton and Demi Runas, who each shot 72, are tied for 34th. Freshman Beverly Vatananugulkit finished with a 77 and is tied for 76th while sophomore Jessica Chulya carded an 80 and is tied for 83rd.
Top-ranked UCLA and No. 32 Washington both fired 7-under 277 team scores and are tied for first, four shots ahead of No. 13 Vanderbilt and five in front of No. 39 and the No. 48 host Cardinal.
The Aggies (292) are just two shots back of 12th place Kent State (290), ranked 38th, and only three back of No. 2 Virginia (289).
Lewis, whose previous season-best is a tie for 23rd at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic at Colorado State, had a double-bogey on the par 4, 10th hole - her first hole of the day. However, she birdied three holes and had just one bogey on her remaining front nine to make the turn even.
Lewis played consistent golf from there, finishing with nine straight pars to post 71, her best score this fall.
Simanton was 4 over after just four holes in her round but bounced back with four birdies, including three over her final five holes, to card a 72. Runas started well with two early birdies to help push her in the red by a shot and later played her back nine just one shot over par on her way to matching Simanton with a 72.
Vatananugulkit had 13 pars and a birdie to help highlight her round while Chulya had a birdie on the par-3 4th hole during her opening 18 holes.
Marina Alex of Vanderbilt fired a blistering 6-under 65 and has a one shot advantage over both SooBin Kim and Sadena Parks of Washington. A total of 24 players broke par on Friday.
UC Davis will play Saturday's second round with Denver and San Diego State and will begin teeing off at 9:15 a.m. The tournament runs through Sunday.
