Sept. 26, 2010

Live scoring

VAIL, Colo. - Demi Runas fired a 1-under 71, Chelsea Stelzmiller and Alice Kim each had 73's as the UC Davis women's golf team finished Sunday's first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club in fourth place.

The tournament brings together representatives from 18 conferences for 54 holes and is being played at the 6,247-yard Fazio Course at Red Sky. Tulane and Virginia took the early lead in three-day event, shooting 1-under 288's to take a four-shot lead over Arizona and a six-shot advantage over the Aggies (293).

Runas is tied for seventh in the 90-player field while Stelzmiller and Kim are also situated high on the leaderboard in a tie for 17th. Sophomores Belen Hernandez and Amy Simanton are both tied for 34th after each carding 76's.

Runas, who tied for eighth at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at New Mexico on Sept. 18, had three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars during Sunday's round. She played the front nine even before a birdie on the par-4, 12th put her in the red. Runas had pars the rest of the way to come in with her 71.

Stelzmiller also had a steady round, parring her first 11 holes before two birdies and three bogeys over her final six helped her card a 73. Kim's 73 featured four birdies and five bogeys.

Simanton had three birdies in her round while Hernandez had a pair. The Aggies' quintet played very well on the course's front nine, combining to shoot just one over.

Virginia's Brittany Altomare and UNLV's Therese Koelbaek each fired 3-under 69's to take a one-shot lead over four other players.

The tournament continues with 18 holes on both Monday and Tuesday.
