ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore Demi Runas birdied four of her first nine holes, including three straight, on her way to a 2-under 71, helping lead UC Davis on Saturday to a fourth-place tie at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico.
Runas tied for eighth among the 92 players, carding a 54-hole total of 1-over 220 after opening the tournament on Friday with rounds of 73 and 76. Senior Chelsea Stelzmiller also posted a strong performance, shooting 75 over the final 18 holes to tie for 11th at 2-over 221.
Sophomore Belen Hernandez tied for 29th at 226 after firing a 76, senior Alice Kim tied for 33rd while shooting a 75 on Saturday, and sophomore Amy Simanton posted a 76 to tie for 36th.
UC Davis finished with a 297 team score for the second consecutive round, tying for fourth at 892 with No. 16 Denver. Oregon, ranked 34th, finished the tournament at 5-over 881 to post a two-shot win over No. 34 Ohio State. Colorado was third, just three shots behind Oregon. The 31st-ranked Aggies finished five shots in front of No. 26 TCU which took sixth.
More than half the 17-team field is ranked among Golfweek's top 50.
Runas opened her day with a birdie on her first hole - the par-4, 4th - and then had five straight pars before stringing consecutive birdies on the 10th through 12th holes. That got her to 4-under before she eventually came back closer to par and finished two shots in the red.
Stelzmilller got to 2-under quickly in her final round before moving to 2-over later and then finishing with six straight pars. Erica Omlid of Oregon closed her event with a 4-under 69 to post a one-shot win over Rachel Rohanna of Ohio State. Omlid had a three-round total of 8-under 211.
UC Davis returns to action on Sept. 26-28 at the Golfweek Challenge in Vail, Colo.
