ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Buoyed by six birdies, senior Chelsea Stelzmiller fired a 4-under 69 during Friday's second round and is tied for ninth among individuals as the No. 31 UC Davis women's golf team moved into fifth place at New Mexico's Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational.
UC Davis had rounds of 6-over 298 and 5-over 297 and is alone in fifth, eight shots off the pace being set by No. 24 Ohio State. San Diego State, ranked 42nd by Golfweek, is in second at 591, four shots behind the Buckeyes, while No. 34 Oregon (592) and No. 16 Denver (594) round out the top four.
Eleven teams ranked among the top 50 are participating in the 54-hole tournament which is being played at the 6,187-yard UNM Championship Course.
Stelzmiller, who shot 77 in the first round, is at par after 36 holes. Two other Aggies - sophomores Demi Runas and Belen Hernandez - are in the top 20. Runas, who highlighted her day with a 73 in the first round, is tied for 13th at 3-over while Hernandez is tied for 20th at 4-over.
Sophomore Amy Simanton and senior Alice Kim are each tied for 33rd after finishing the day at 6-over 152.
Stelzmiller had an impressive second round, firing four birdies over an eight-hole span to get to four under. Birdies over her final two holes - both of them par-fives - countered two earlier bogeys and brought her in with a 4-under 69.
Runas had three birdies and three bogeys in her first-round 73 while Hernandez had six birdies her two rounds combined.
Theresa Koelbaek of UNLV had back-to-back rounds of 70 and at 6-under 140 holds a two-shot lead over three players.
The final round will be played on Saturday morning.
