TANAGURA, Japan - Sophomore Demi Runas shot a 3-under 69 during Friday's second round, finishing the day at 2-under 142 and leading the UC Davis women's golf team to fourth place after 36 holes at The Topy Cup being played at Tanagura Country Club in Japan.
The tournament, a unique season-opener for the Aggies, brings together collegiate teams from the United States to face Japanese collegiate teams and individuals. The event, which had its first round Thursday postponed by rain, marks the first time the Aggies' program has competed internationally.
The University of Arizona is the other American team in the 54-hole tournament with a corresponding men's event also taking place.
UC Davis shot par-288 in the second round on Friday, countering a 12-over 300 in the first. Runas led the way in the second round with her impressive round while senior Alice Kim fired a 1-under 71. Sophomore Amy Simanton had a 73, senior Chelsea Stelzmiller carded a 75 and sophomore Belen Hernandez finished with a 77.
Simanton and Stelzmiller each paced UC Davis with rounds of 72 in the morning while Runas shot 73. Kim and Hernandez each finished with an 83.
At 12-over 588, the Aggies are 10 shots in front of Hosei University. Arizona posted par team scores in each round and lead Nagoya University of Commerceby two shots. Tohoku Fukushi is seven shots behind Arizona and five in front of UC Davis.
Runas is tied for third at 2-under 142 while Simanton is in 10th at 1-over. Stelzmiller is tied for 13th at 3-over, Kim is tied for 25th at 10-over and Hernadez is in 28th at 16-over.
The teams will complete the final round on Saturday morning (JST).
