IRVINE, Calif. - A total of 20 UC Davis student-athletes from six teams earned 2010 Big West Conference All-Academic honors for spring sports, it was announced Tuesday by the conference office. The Aggie women's track and field team led the UC Davis contingent with nine honorees while women's water polo saw five student-athletes receive recognition.
In order to be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes must hold a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be in sophomore standing academically and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests. In total, 215 student-athletes from nine member institutions were selected.
The nine selected from the UC Davis women's track and field program included seniors Tessa Fraser, Kaitlin Gregg and Alison Stoakley as well as juniors Mina Mohamadi and Ofunne Okwudiafor. Sophomores Abbey Gallaher, Samantha Kearney, Sarah Sumpter and Lauren Wallace were also named to the list of honorees. Fraser, a pole vaulter from Lodi, Calif., earns the award for the third time in her UC Davis career as does Stoakley, a distance runner from Torrance, Calif.
In women's water polo, senior Dana Nelsen, an art studio major from San Diego, was honored for the second straight year and was joined by sophomores Alicia Began, Kaylee Miller, Christina Miyabe and Kaitlyn Schlueter.
Eric Johnson is an honoree by the conference for the second straight year while Nathan Slater earned his first as did Tyler Lee and Nick Lopez of the men's tennis team.
Sidney Brady was the lone representative for UC Davis in women's tennis while sophomore Will Guthrie was the Aggies' only selection for men's track and field.
