Pacific Beats UC Davis 11-7 In Series Finale

May 9, 2010

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Jake Hummel pitched eight innings for the win and Mike Walker had three hits - including an early two-run home run - as Pacific earned a weekend sweep of host UC Davis with an 11-7 Big West Conference baseball win under cloudy skies and intermittent showers on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The loss dropped the Aggies' overall record to 19-24 and their Big West mark to 4-11 while the Tigers improved to 29-16 overall and 11-7 in the conference. Sean Batty had three hits and scored two runs for UC Davis while David Popkins had a pair of hits.

Hummel allowed eight hits and seven runs - five of them earned - didn't walk any and had no strikeouts, improving his record to 7-2. Scott Lyman went 5-2/3 innings for UC Davis, striking out seven and walking seven while giving up 10 hits and eight runs. Lyman, who along with teammate Kyle Myhalo had a double, fell to 3-6.

The Tigers scored five times over the first three innings, all of them coming with two outs. Lyman struck out Brett Christopher and Nick Longmire to start the game but walked first baseman Brian Martin, setting the table for Walker who hit a homer to right-center field, his ninth of the year. Matthew Carvutto's single through the left side brought around catcher Joe Oliveira in the second while John Haberman's run-scoring single in the third scored another. Carvutto was hit with the bases-loaded for the other two-out run in the early innings.

Trailing 2-0 in the first, the Aggies took the lead with three runs in their half of the frame. Lyman's two-run double plated Batty and Scott Heylman who had opened the inning with consecutive singles. A grounder from Mihaylo later in the inning scored Popkins who reached after being hit with a pitch.

The Aggies scored three times in the fourth inning, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 lead. Heylman had a sacrifice fly while a groundout and an infield error accounted for the other two runs. Hummel settled down from there, putting down the Aggies in order the next three innings before Popkins led off the eighth with a single. The Tigers, meanwhile, scored three times off Lyman in the sixth to take the lead, the first run coming from J.B. Brown's single.

Three runs off reliever Matthew Lewis in the ninth completed Pacific's scoring. Carvutto joined Walker with three hits while also knocking in two runs.

Showers came and went throughout the game with the contest halted for 17 minutes midway after some of the heavier rain fell.

UC Davis will play a nonconference game at Saint Mary's on Tuesday.
