STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Chelsea Stelzmiller carded a 2-over 73 on Saturday - the Aggies' best round of the tournament - and the UC Davis women's golf team tied for the day's sixth-best total with a 14-over 298 as it finished 15th at the NCAA Division I West Regional at Stanford Golf Course.
Stelzmiller, from Union Mine High School, finished in a tie for 17th at 9-over 222 after opening the 54-hole tournament with rounds of 74 and 75. Junior Alice Kim - who like Stelzmiller was making her third straight appearance in the regional championship - posted her third consecutive 75 and tied for 30th at 12-over 225.
Senior Kimberly Johnson improved her total for the second straight day, carding a solid 3-over 74 to finish in a tie for 66th at 19-over. Freshman Demi Runas tied for 85th at 23-over after shooting 77 - her best round of the week - while freshman Amy Simanton tied for 91st at 24-over after posting a 76, also her best of the championship.
UC Davis was hoping to make a run for its second berth in the NCAA Finals in the past three years, needing a top-eight finish to qualify. The Aggies were tied for 16th after each of the first two rounds and got to within single-digits of eighth-place during Saturday's round but were unable to move into one of the qualifying spots. Still, their 14-over 298 was tied for sixth-best on the afternoon - best by six shots among teams that did not advance to the NCAA Finals - and was a nine-shot improvement over their second-round score on Friday. UC Davis totaled 61-over 913 for the regional.
Seventh-ranked Arizona, which finished 24 shots over par, won by nine strokes over top-ranked UCLA. Texas, Alabama, Virginia, Stanford, San Jose State and Texas A&M also qualified for the NCAA Finals in North Carolina later in May. Megan McChrystal of LSU and Ellen Mueller of Oklahoma were the top two finishers not on an advancing team, also earning trips to the finals.
Callie Nielson of Virginia and Madeleine Ziegert of San Jose State each finished the tournament just one shot over par, tying for medalist honors.
Stelzmiller had a rough start in the final round, playing the first three holes four shots over par. However a birdie and five straight pars helped steady her round heading to her back nine (she began her round on the 10th hole). Stelzmiller played the course's first nine holes an impressive one under, using back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth to bring her back to just two over.
Kim was three over after two holes of her round but then had three birdies and four pars to make her turn even and eventually post a 75. Johnson, whose previous-best round in the tournament was a 77, had two birdies and 11 pars for her 74 while Runas and Simanton each had two birdies.
The tournament brought to a close an outstanding 2009-10 season for the Aggies who won three tournaments including their first-ever Big West Conference championship. Kim was named the Big West Player of the Year, Simanton earned Freshman of the Year honors, and the duo was joined by Stelzmiller - medalist at the conference tournament - and Runas on the All-Big West first team. Johnson was a second-team pick. Additionally, Walker was named the Big West Coach of the Year.
